1st Manifesto Ars Situare was written by the artists Oddvar I.N. Daren and Lars Paalgard in 1983. The Manifesto states that “Ars Situare is a philosophy of perception which aim is to (…) make possible an active communication between subject and object”. Ars Situarebactions performed by the artists under the name Gruppen ( The Group ), often took the form of situative walks where the artists would turn the attention of the audience towards the ephemeral qualities of space; traces left by human labor or natural processes of decay.
Places where common observation was performed, were marked by an Ars Situare stamp or stencil - thus acknowledging the production of space as a collective endeavor embedded in historical and material conditions.
Oddvar Daren (b. 1953, Vesterålen, Norway) and Leiken Vik ( b.1962, Porsgrunn ) both live and work in Trondheim and have been active participants in the artistic and urban life of the city since the early 80´s. Recently they have collaborated on projects such as
Nasjonal Steinpark ( The National Stone Park) at Østparkneset, commissioned by NGU (Geological Survey of Norway ), and collaborated at the registration and site planning for Ladestien, Trondheim municipality. Oddvar I.N. Daren received his education from the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, Norway (1977–81) and the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, The Netherlands (1982–84). His work has been presented in major institutions such as Museum of Contemporary art / The National Museum, Henie Onstad Art Center and Trondheim Art Museum. In 2018 Kunsthall Trondheim presented a generous selection of works, focussing mainly on land art, performance and film, works that were produced
during or can be traced back to the Ars Situare period. Daren has previously been festival artist of Arctic Arts Festival, and is represented in the international art project Artscape Nordland (Skulpturlandskap Nordland).
Leiken Vik received her training as an artist at the
Art Academy of Trondheim ( 1985-1989). Her work has been shown at institutions such as Trondheim Art Museum, Gallery Ismene, Trondheim Art Association and the Nordic Watercolour Museum, Sweden. Her work is included in the collections of Art Councils
Norway, Trondheim Municipality and Trondheim Art Museum.
