Welcome to ImproLab - Trio with Alexander Ventling, Phelan Burgoyne and Anna Thu Schmidt on Sunday 9th of March 2025 kl 17-19 at DansiT (Strandveien 33, Trondheim)

ImproLab is an improvisation laboratory for artists from all disciplines and the community of movement and sound enthusiasts in Trondheim. The Lab wants to offer creative approaches to certain topics that can be explored interdisciplinary through improvisation - a place to inspire and to connect!

This ImproLab is a meeting between improvising pianist Alexander Ventling, drummer Phelan Burgoyne and dance artist Anna Thu Schmidt. In this interactive movement and sound journey we will explore the dynamics of a trio within music and dance. The first hour offers a collective exploration where the musicians will translate their improvisational language from sound to movement with tools such as motivic development, deep listening, limiting exercises and decision-making. The second hour is the “open jam” - a free space and playground for music and dance improvisation without guidance where everyone participates as much as they want in their own way. Here, we alternate between the roles of dancer, musician and audience. Everyone is free to dance alone or in contact with others, sit and watch, make sounds or relax with their eyes closed and listen to the music.

Dance experience is not required. Musicians are very welcome to join and to bring their own instruments. The event will be held in English. Doors open 15 minutes before the event and will be closed by the start of the event.

ImproDans Trondheim wants to offer an open, free, and safe space for movement and sound exploration and a playful approach to improvisation.

Bio: Alex Ventling is a pianist, composer, teacher, filmmaker, originally from New Zealand, living in Trondheim, Norway. After completing his Master in Music Education, Alex started the European Jazz Masters, an international degree across European conservatories. Alex leads his own projects (KOHERU, Wavemakers, Alex Ventling, Phelan Burgoyne duo) and is involved in many Norwegian and European projects, and performs internationally. https://www.alexventling.com

Anna Thu Schmidt is a dance artist with a passion for dance improvisation, interdisciplinary collaborations, site-specific performances, and integrated dance. She holds a B.A. in Dance in Education (ArtEZ University of the Arts Arnhem/Netherlands) and M.A. in Dance Studies (NTNU). Anna leads ImproDans Trondheim and Samtidsdans for voksne Trondheim, and started up PRAXIS Trondheim and Ecstatic Dance in Trondheim. annathuschmidt.com
